Mercenary punishment in structured populations

چکیده

Punishing those who refuse to participate in common efforts is a known and intensively studied way maintain cooperation among self-interested agents. But this act costly, hence punishers are generally also engaged the original joint venture, become vulnerable, which jeopardizes effectiveness of incentive. As an alternative, we may hire special players, whose only duty watch population punish defectors. Such policelike or mercenary punishment can be maintained by tax-based fund. If tax negligible, cyclic dominance emerge different strategies. When relevant then solution disappears. In latter case, fine level becomes significant factor that determines whether punisher players coexist with cooperators alternatively The maximal average outcome reached at intermediate cost value punishment. Our observations highlight should take care when such kind accompanying introduced reach collective goal.

Self-organization of punishment in structured populations

Cooperation is crucial for the remarkable evolutionary success of the human species. Not surprisingly, some individuals are willing to bear additional costs in order to punish defectors. Current models assume that, once set, the fine and cost of punishment do not change over time. Here we show that relaxing this assumption by allowing players to adapt their sanctioning efforts in dependence on ...

Punishment can promote defection in group-structured populations.

Pro-social punishment, whereby cooperators punish defectors, is often suggested as a mechanism that maintains cooperation in large human groups. Importantly, models that support this idea have to date only allowed defectors to be the target of punishment. However, recent empirical work has demonstrated the existence of anti-social punishment in public goods games. That is, individuals that defe...

Equilibria in structured populations.

The existence of a stable positive equilibrium state for the density rho of a population which is internally structured by means of a single scalar such as age, size, etc. is studied as a bifurcation problem. Using an inherent birth modulus n as a bifurcation parameter it is shown for very general nonlinear model equations, in which vital birth and growth processes depend on population density,...

Association mapping in structured populations.

The use, in association studies, of the forthcoming dense genomewide collection of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has been heralded as a potential breakthrough in the study of the genetic basis of common complex disorders. A serious problem with association mapping is that population structure can lead to spurious associations between a candidate marker and a phenotype. One common solut...

Social evolution in structured populations.

Understanding the evolution of social behaviours such as altruism and spite is a long-standing problem that has generated thousands of articles and heated debates. Previous theoretical studies showed that whether altruism and spite evolve may be contingent on seemingly artificial model features, such as which rule is chosen to update the population (for example, birth-death or death-birth), and...
